In this 12-week study, apple polyphenol intervention at various doses showed no significant differences in facial skin hydration or transepidermal water loss. However, given the link between proanthocyanidins and the gut microbiome, and the role of gut microbiota regulation in skin homeostasis, apple extracts may suppress skin pigmentation and oxidation by modulating the gut microbiome. Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Apple Polyphenols on Ulcerative Colitis
Results show that dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) increases hypothalamic cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), which apple polyphenol extract reverses. Changes in COX-2 in the hippocampus and cortex were not significant, but low-dose apple polyphenol extract reduced cortical COX-2. DSS decreased hypothalamic postsynaptic density protein 95 (PSD-95), while the apple polyphenol intervention group showed an increase; no differences were observed in hippocampal or cortical PSD-95.
